Celebrating Poila Boishakh: A Tapestry of Tradition and Renewal

On the auspicious occasion of Poila Boishakh, the inaugural day of the Bengali New Year, our colony, Chittaranjan Park, comes alive with vibrant festivities. Falling typically on the 14th or 15th of April each year, this day is a jubilant celebration of everything quintessentially Bengali - from deep spirituality to culinary delights, from artistic expression to traditional attire, and of course, the timeless tradition of Bengali adda.

One of the highlights of this day is the observance of Haal Khata, a festival where Bengali businessmen, shopkeepers, and traders gather to close the accounts of the past year and embark on a fresh ledger, symbolizing a new beginning. As the new harvest is reaped, households bustle with the preparations of various delicacies made from freshly harvested rice. Clad in pristine new garments, Bengalis throng to temples in the early hours, offering fervent prayers for a year filled with prosperity, happiness, and peace.

Respecting tradition, they seek blessings from elders, touching their feet as a mark of reverence. Throughout the day, homes are adorned with lavish feasts, shared generously with loved ones and neighbors, fostering a sense of community and abundance. It is believed that the actions taken on this day set the tone for the entire year, inspiring a collective effort towards happiness and success. As the evening descends, the air is filled with the melodies of cultural performances, echoing the rich heritage cherished by every Bengali, passed down with unwavering devotion to future generations.

Living Life in Full Color

A Tribute to Shantanu Guha Ray A Fearless Journalist, Loving Father, and Eternal Optimist

BY OINDRILLA GUHA RAY

My father, Mr. Shantanu Guha Ray left us forever on 25th March 2024. He was a man who was full of life and colours. He lived life on his own terms and loved taking risks.

A journalist by profession, my father was extremely sharp and had an eye for detail. Absolutely nothing could escape his ears and eyes. His knack to gather/cover news rubbed off on me as well and unknowingly I also got the knack of gathering news almost everywhere I go. I had never imagined a life without him.

I always thought that he will live till 80-85 years and still gather news. He was a brilliant journalist. With him leaving, there is a huge void which I just have to live with. I'm still trying to comprehend what happened and why it happened. Papa was a child at heart and most of the time he behaved like one. He loved having people around him.

He wasn't a person who would say no. One could call him at any time of the day and speak to him about anything. He had the solution to almost any problem.

My mother and I were his world. He doted on me and never liked to see me sad. Even when I moved to Mumbai, he clearly told me that I should never compromise on anything. Even though he didn't want me to leave Delhi, he was extremely proud of me that I could manage everything on my own in such a big city.

I know that there are a lot of people who go to the big city and manage on their own but for my father I was still his little girl who went to a big city. I know he is still proud of me wherever he is but I still miss him at every moment of my life. He lived like a king and went like a king. Nothing could ever stop him and nothing did.

TRIBUTES TO AVEREE CHAUREY

In memory of Averee Chourey, by Anita Haldar

Averee Chourey's brilliance always shone like a distant star to me, adorned with glamour and talent. I had long admired her from afar, so when she unexpectedly visited my home one fine morning, expressing interest in performing at CR Park Kali Mandir, it was a moment of great surprise and joy. As time passed, she transformed from an admired figure into a cherished friend. Yet, despite the bond we forged, the cruel hand of fate whisked her away, back to her own realm, leaving me behind. May her soul find solace in eternal peace. Om Shanti !

Tribute by Ankur Mondal

Dear Masi, I remember the first day I saw you in our school workshop. I was awestruck. Those beautiful doe eyes, lids gracefully outlined with Kajal, and the huge Bindi placed right at the centre of the forehead enhanced the beauty of that oval face. The aura you emitted was a reflection of a divine being, unlike any I had ever seen before.

I was in 8th grade, and it had been just a year since I had started learning Bangla. You and Badal Sir taught me how to pronounce words properly. You literally guided me through and did "Hate Khori" in theatres, especially Bangla theatres.

You taught me the difference between reading and reciting poetry—understanding the hidden feelings and expressing them just with your eyes and words. I can never forget the poem "Lukochuri" which you taught me like a mother teaches her son.

With work taking a toll on my life, I hardly get to see you, but whenever I saw you during Durga Puja, my heart used to fill with gratitude, and this feeling will remain forever.

I still can't accept the fact that I read about your demise. And yes, you are gone too soon. I will forever be blessed that I got to learn the best from you. You were, and forever will be, my Averee Masi. Rest in Peace and Pride.

Om Shanti. Ankur Mondal

RAISINA SHINES WITH SIGN- SWEEPS MELA GROUND CLEAN

Raisina School children shone again with their energy, determination and dedication and cleaned Mela Ground of all plastic along with the benevolent support of SIGN members. The children trotted across the expansive ground with gloved hands and some carrying plogging sticks, picking up strewn plastic wrappers, bottle caps, cloth, tissues and other non - biodegradable items. Some of the plastic things were so deeply embedded in the ground that it was difficult to plog them out. But the determined bunch of kids did not give up till every plastic was safely thrown into the large garbage bags which were also carried by some children.

They were accompanied by SIGN members and their teachers who guided them and also helped to pick garbage from the grounds. They also motivated everyone by shouting motivational slogans as well! One hour later, 8 full bags were filled with trash and were kept aside for MCD to pick up later. The children were then rewarded with cookies and cold drinks for their hard work. A wonderful and satisfying morning drew to a close with more such events panning out in the near future with the enthusiastic students.

Blossoms of Renewal

Embracing the Ever-Changing Beauty of Nature

by Anindita Roy

The enchanting season of Chaitra and ‘Patjhar’ has graced us with its presence, casting a transformative spell upon the landscape outside my living room window. The majestic Sojne and Bael trees, visible in the park from my window, once adorned with their verdant foliage, now stand bare as they gracefully shed their old leaves. Yet, amidst this quiet transition, new life emerges as delicate baby leaves unfurl, adorning the branches with tender greenery.

Notably, the Sojne tree bursts forth with clusters of pristine white flowers, promising the imminent arrival of the coveted ‘sojne daanta’. While some of these prized pods still dangle high above, evading eager hands, they find unexpected guests in the playful Tiya Paakhis and Kaathbiralis, who delight in feasting on their seeds.

Meanwhile, the bael fruits, once concealed within the dense foliage, now hang freely, ripe for the picking. Across the strip-park, two Krishnachuda trees stand sentinel, their nascent green leaves hinting at the forthcoming explosion of fiery red and orange blooms. These vibrant blossoms infuse the sultry summer days with an infectious energy, transforming the urban landscape into a riot of color.

As the spring blooms fade into memory, the summer trees take center stage, painting our surroundings with a kaleidoscope of hues. From the cheerful yellows of the Amaltas to the blushing pinks of the Jarul, and the regal purples of the Jacaranda, each tree adds its own unique charm to the cityscape. Together with the fiery reds and oranges of the Krishnachuras and Radhachuras, they illuminate the city streets and parks, casting a spell of enchantment upon all who behold them.

Though the spring flowers and towering hollyhocks may be bidding us farewell, their joyful presence lingers, having woven a tapestry of beauty and wonder that truly made our world feel like paradise.

As the seasons gracefully transition and nature's symphony continues to unfold, I find solace in the timeless rhythm of renewal and growth. Each bloom and leaf, a testament to the eternal cycle of life, fills my heart with gratitude for the ever-changing beauty that surrounds us, offering a glimpse of the boundless wonders yet to come.

OPEN LETTER TO CIVIC AUTHOURITIES REGARDING ENCROACHMENT OF BACKLANES

The back lane of our houses has been encroached with installations of AC outdoor machines in public area. These machines have been permanently fixed on the back lane which is completely unauthorized and pose a serious security hazard. In the case of any emergency like fire or the need of an ambulance emergency vehicles cannot even enter the back lane. This has been pointed out multiple times to the owners of the house which has done the encroachment but they do not seem to understand the risks and have taken no action till date. Also there is open sewage water and water from the overhead water tank which overflows every day onto the back lane and have turned it into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and is a huge health concern.

Attached are pictures which show the status of the back lane and also highlights the casual attitude of the concerned owners of H -1455 , C R Park and shows their gross negligence to the law.

Mr Sujit Baksi and Mr Chinmoyee Sarkar , owners of H- 1471, have bought it to the notice of local SHO, concerned Health Department of MCD and Lt Governors office with no results.

Would request the relevant authorities to please use your good offices and get these illegal installations removed and also stoppage of the overflowing of overhead tanks and leakage of sewerage water so that the back lane can be cleared up to allow passage of emergency vehicles if the need arises.

Powering Tomorrow: A Short Guide to Installing Solar Panels in Your Home

A Chat Session With A Conscious Citizen Harnessing Sustainable Energy for a Brighter, Greener Future Right at Home

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gMFhkyNPTw

In an effort to promote sustainable energy practices and reduce reliance on conventional power sources, the Government of Delhi has implemented a subsidy program for solar panels. This initiative aims to encourage residents and businesses to adopt solar energy solutions, thereby contributing to environmental conservation and energy independence.

Under this subsidy scheme, eligible individuals and entities can receive financial assistance for the installation of solar panels on their rooftops. The subsidy covers a significant portion of the initial investment, making solar energy more accessible and affordable for consumers. By leveraging solar power, residents can not only reduce their electricity bills but also play a vital role in mitigating climate change and decreasing carbon emissions.

Moreover, the adoption of solar panels aligns with Delhi's commitment to achieving its renewable energy targets and fostering a greener, more sustainable future. Through partnerships with solar energy providers and effective dissemination of information, the government aims to increase awareness about the benefits of solar energy and encourage widespread adoption across the city.

In essence, the solar panel subsidy in Delhi represents a proactive step towards harnessing clean and renewable energy sources. By incentivizing the transition to solar power, the government seeks to empower citizens to become active participants in the fight against climate change while simultaneously enjoying the economic benefits of sustainable energy solutions.

Embracing Tradition The Spirit and Splendor of Kumari Pujo

BY JAYA RAY

Kumari Puja stands as a pivotal function within the festivities of Durga Puja, observed during both Chaitra and Sharad Navaratri. It entails the symbolic worship of an unmarried teenage girl, revered as a goddess. This ritual typically culminates at the conclusion of Mahastami puja, although it can also transpire on the day of Navami puja. Additionally, Kumari Puja finds its place in other festivals such as Kali Puja, Jaggadhatri Puja, Annapurna Puja, and Shakti Puja.

Notably, Kumari Puja transcends distinctions of race, religion, or caste in the selection of a virgin for worship. Theoretically, any girl from any community, caste, or creed can be perceived as a deity deserving of worship, including those from the prostitute community. The age of the chosen girl, ranging from 1 to 16, determines her designation: Sandhya at 1 year, Saraswati at 2 years, Tridhamurti at 3 years, Kalika at 4 years, and so forth. Detailed descriptions of the rituals and significance of Kumari Puja can be found in texts such as Yoginitantra, Kularnavatantra, Devipurana, and others.

A notable instance of Kumari Puja occurred when Ramakrishna worshipped his wife, Sarada Devi,as Maa Shoroshi during Phalaharini Kali Puja at Dakshineshwar. The essence of Kumari Puja lies in bestowing blessings upon the worshippers and eliminating all forms of danger. It serves to underscore the value of women, symbolizing creation, stability, and the ability to vanquish evil—a divine power bestowed by Adi Shakti upon all women.

Legend recounts the tale of Kolasur, a fearsome demon who terrorized the realms of heaven, earth, and hell. The gods implored Goddess Kali to rid them of this menace. Taking the form of Kumari, she ultimately vanquished the demon.

The reinstatement of Kumari Puja in 1902 by Swami Vivekananda reflects its enduring significance. During his travels across India, he encountered a poverty-stricken boatman's daughter whom he deemed fit for worship. With his disciples by his side, he conducted the Kumari Puja, thus honoring the divine essence within the girl.

Swami Vivekananda's legacy lives on through the Kumari Puja observed at Belur Math during the Durga Puja celebrations—a tradition upheld by the Ramakrishna Mission to this day. Thousands converge at the majestic temple in Belurmath annually to partake in this sacred ritual.
