Can Contemporary Puja Design Learn from the Principles of Circular Design? Durga Puja is, at its heart, an extraordinary act of collective design. Every year, designers, artisans, craftsmen, organisers and communities come together to create temporary architecture, sculpture, lighting, textiles and visual experiences—often transforming an ordinary neighbourhood into an immersive cultural landscape. But there is one question contemporary design needs to ask: What happens to all of it when Puja is over? The pandal comes down. The decorations are dismantled. Fabric is discarded. Thermocol becomes waste. Synthetic materials may enter the waste stream. Flowers and offerings are mixed with other refuse. And during immersion, materials associated with idols and decoration can ultimately reach water bodies.
