Central to our annual celebrations is the Panjika —the sacred almanac that governs every ritual, offering, and timing. This year, according to the venerable Gupta Press Directory Panjika 1433 , the astrological alignments carry immense significance, promising a unique blend of divine blessings and cosmic warnings through the Goddess’s choice of vehicles ( vahans ). The Auspicious Arrival: Devi Agaman on Gaja (Elephant) Every year, the day of the week on which Maha Saptami falls dictates how Ma Durga arrives from her heav...

WHO OWNS THE FOOTPATH?

A clear legal position on illegal pavement encroachment in Delhi crparkspeaks@gmail.com   Delhi’s footpaths are public pedestrian infrastructure , not private extensions of shops. Street vending is recognised as a livelihood, but it is regulated by designated vending zones, allotted spaces and conditions designed to protect pedestrian movement. The law does not give a shopkeeper or vendor an unrestricted right to occupy a public footpath. 1. The 6 ft × 4 ft rule is a vending-space standard—not ownership of the pavement Under the Delhi Street Vendors Scheme, 2019 , a space of 6 ft × 4 ft is considered for one static/mobile/temporary/night-bazaar vendor. The Scheme also requires vending zones and their capacity to be determined through the prescribed planning/Town Vending Committee process. ( UDD Delhi ) Therefore, a vendor cannot interpret the 6 × 4 ft provision as permission to spread goods, racks, tables, refrigerators, counters, tarpaulins or other structures b...

Transformation Of E Block, C R Park

The Transformation Of E Block, C R Park, Durga Puja Park Courtesy Chittaranjan Park Purbachal Durga Puja Samiti And Resident’s Welfare Association, E-Block, C R Park by Sri Saibal Ghosh, Member, EC of CPPDPS and E-Block RWA, with inputs from Shri S S Roy Burman. The C R Park, E Block park has been the centre point of my life for the past 50 years encompassing my growing up years, since the first time I put my foot on it as an 11-year-old pre-teenager, in the winter of 1976! Since then, for the next 12 years, the air around this park rented with our shouts of joy and despair during our evening football games, cricket matches and of course our ubiquitous ‘addas’.   I remember the hours we spent as teenagers, slogging away to swipe the park with brooms to get rid of the prickly thorns on the ground, hurt our young feet often! Those days C R Park was developing and slowly getting populated with erstwhile wild open spaces turning into makeshift playgrounds with the removal of wild b...

JANANI JANMABHUMISHCHA SWARGADAPI GARIYASI

" अपि स्वर्णमयी लङ्का न मे लक्ष्मण रोचते । जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी ॥" "Api svarṇamayī Laṅkā na me Lakṣmaṇa rocate; Jananī janmabhūmiśca svargādapi garīyasī." "O Lakshmana, even if Lanka is made of gold, it does not appeal to me. My mother and my motherland are greater even than heaven." Few verses from the Indian epics have echoed through centuries with as much emotional resonance as this declaration attributed to Lord Rama after the victory over Lanka. While the golden city represented prosperity, power, and abundance, Rama's choice reflected a deeper truth—that a homeland is not measured by its wealth but by the bonds of belonging, identity, duty, and love. As India celebrates another Independence Day, this ancient verse invites us to revisit the meaning of freedom in a world that is increasingly interconnected, digital, and global. Political independence was achieved in 1947 through extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and collective deter...

The Mystic Nuances at Rishikesh

The Mystic Nuances at Rishikesh   by Sanjoy Das Gupta   End March 2018, me and my wife with two very close and dear family friends, had planned out a very short stay at an ashram very near the Rishikesh Barrage with the serene Ganges flowing by ever so elegantly with all its mystic nuances that evolve and emerge as one starts to be in communion with her grace and blessings. Post our “anondo-sobhas” at the early morning hours and in the evenings at the exclusive open first floor verandah overlooking the flowing mystic Ganges, we read out Sri Ramakrishna’s “Kathamrita” by “Shri M” with appropriate opening and soulful “Rabindra-Sangeet”, followed by deliberations on the innumerable dimensions of the Ramakrishna Movement as one tries to initially fathom from Swami Vivekananda’s talks and his innumerable priceless deliberations. The holy dips in the Ganges early morning & in the evening at the adjoining private ghat of the ashram were heavenly and ushered in a total sta...

Sustainable Waste Management

From Resistance to Recognition: How E Block, CR Park Became a Model for Sustainable Waste Management In an inspiring story of community resilience and environmental responsibility, the Residents Welfare Association (RWA), E Block, Chittaranjan Park has emerged as a shining example of what citizen-led initiatives can achieve when vision meets persistence. In 2026, their efforts were formally recognised by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) at the prestigious Green Friend and Participation Award Ceremony —a moment that marks not just an achievement, but a milestone in Delhi’s growing movement towards sustainable urban living. At the heart of this recognition lies a comprehensive and well-executed system of solid waste management, decentralised composting, and carbon footprint reduction at the neighbourhood level . What sets E Block apart is not merely participation, but complete implementation—an end-to-end model that addresses waste at its source and transforms it into a resou...
