Exploring South Delhi's Winter Trails From Chittaranjan Park

A Journey Through Historic Landmarks and Serene Gardens

 

Heritage walks through South Delhi’s historic landmarks can unveil a treasure trove of hidden wonders and tranquil green spaces. As the winter days set in, it's time to visit these timeless heritage and historic sites, and learn more about them while soaking in the warm, winter sun. 

 

1.   Mehrauli Archaeological Park and surroundings: A mere 20 minutes drive from CR Park, your winter trail can start at the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, an ancient gem dotted with centuries-old structures. An iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site, is flanked by Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque and Alai Darwaza. Adjacent to the park, the dargah (tomb) of Bakhtiyar Kaki remains a pilgrimage site where people from various faiths gather to seek blessings and spiritual solace. A must visit is also the ‘Jain Dadabari’, a beautiful and serene temple complex next to Mehrauli Archeological park.


2.   Lodhi Garden & Safdarjung Tomb: Another short drive from CR Park will take you to  Lodhi Garden, a serene oasis amidst the bustling city. Adorned with medieval tombs and lush landscapes, it provides a perfect and tranquil escape. Continue your journey to the majestic Safdarjung Tomb, another Mughal marvel housed closeby. The blend of history and nature in this leg of the trail is a feast for the senses.


3.   Sunder Nursery, The Humayun Tomb Complex, and Rahim’s Tomb: A favourite picnic spot for South Delhiites, this beautiful park welcomes you with vibrant flower beds and historic monuments. Stroll through the expansive gardens, discovering the beauty of nature intertwined with history. Continue to the nearby Humayun Tomb Complex, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explore the serene ambience. Conclude this segment with a visit to Rahim Tomb, a lesser-known gem with intricate carvings and a peaceful atmosphere.


4.   Kotla Mubarakpur Complex: A bustling commercial area in front, dotting the fringes of Lodi Road , this historic place has lot of hidden stories to tell. Wander through the narrow lanes, and discover centuries-old structures and intricate craftsmanship. Kotla Mubarakpur offers a glimpse into the city's diverse heritage, adding another layer to your cultural exploration. 


5.   Hauz Khas, Deer Park, and the Lake Complex: A verdant expanse of green garden framed by a long stony wall, is the charming enclave of Hauz Khas. A 15 minute dash from CR Park, the historical Hauz Khas Village takes you back into the pre Mughal era of Delhi.  Proceed to the adjacent Deer Park, dotted with herds of deer playing around in the enclosed man made tiny forest. Conclude your journey at the Hauz Khas Lake Complex, where a scenic lake provides a perfect backdrop for a leisurely evening stroll.

A Historic Milestone in the Life of KMS
