CR PARK SPEAKS MAY 2025

Dear Readers,

Boishakh or the onset of summer - a whirlwind of  change is witnessed in nature.  A riot of colours continue from spring, albeit with a more pronounced and serene stability that sets in to gradually taper off the rebirth of nature that takes place in spring. Nature settles down to provide nourishment, growth, shade and continuity to life.

The magic of nature continues in the vegetation, crops and cultivation where the seasonal vegetation starts to provide coolness, nourishment and natural strength to the living beings, especially the human body. It is like after a night of partying, the body craves for the quiet nourishment of a detox meal the next day- summer imparts that complete detoxification to the human body.

The Bangali palette seamlessly adopts the sour, the bitter, the light soups, the boiled vegetables and naturally heals and cools the body. Every dish in an average Bangali household loving nurtures the gut at the same time giving immense joy and satisfaction to every foodie Bengali.

The cultural calendar sets out for the entire year, starting with the birth months of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, that initiates a flurry of cultural outings all  across.

This issue brings to you a curated bouquet of articles, videos, musings, interactions and last but not the least, the issues that plague our dear colony. Our endeavour to bring out issues every month, is to hear from you all dear readers, your feedback, opinions suggestions, scoldings, anything that you want to share with us. We painstakingly put together every issue to  tickle your intellectual taste buds , ply you with happenings in the colony, offer you food for thought or just give you plain entertainment.

We earnestly await your pats and/ or brickbats.

Happy Reading !
Blessings for a safe, serene, and soulful summer.

Creative Summers in CR Park: A Slice of Culture, Community & Cool Escapes in Delhi

Nestled in the heart of South Delhi, Chittaranjan Park (CR Park) is more than just a residential colony — it is a vibrant cultural enclave, deeply rooted in Bengali heritage and bustling with creative energy. As Delhi’s summer sun beats down, the tree-lined bylanes of CR Park come alive with a different kind of heat: the warm, welcoming buzz of a community that thrives on art, music, food, and shared traditions.

A Bengali Soul in Delhi’s Summer Heat

Originally established as a safe haven for the Bengali community after Partition, CR Park has grown into a lively, inclusive neighborhood that balances tradition with modernity. In summer, this balance becomes especially visible. From homegrown art exhibitions to open-air music evenings in neighborhood parks, the colony creatively adapts to the season.

Cultural Oases in the Heat

Despite the soaring temperatures, CR Park doesn’t lose its cool. Shady trees, verdant gardens, and the occasional breeze through the colony’s old-world architecture offer natural relief. Cultural centers like Bengali Association’s Kalibari, Chittaranjan Bhawan, and local auditoriums host indoor performances — from Rabindra Sangeet evenings to theatre workshops — providing cooling escapes for art lovers and families alike.

Summer Specials at CR Park Markets

The famed CR Park markets—especially Market No. 1 and Market No. 2—are buzzing hubs all year round, but summer adds its own flavor. Seasonal fruits like litchis, mangoes, and jackfruit crowd the vendor carts, while kulfiwalas, aam panna sellers, and tender coconut stands offer cooling indulgences. Fish markets, ever an essential part of Bengali households, continue to serve their loyal clientele early in the day before the sun peaks.

Local artisans set up stalls selling handmade jewelry, printed cotton sarees, terracotta items, and summer-friendly fabrics, giving the markets a melange of creativity and commerce.

Art, Design & Interiors: Summer in Style

CR Park is home to a growing community of artists, designers, interior consultants, and heritage conservationists who find inspiration in the colony’s distinctive character. This season, many creatives are bringing the outdoors in—working with handwoven textiles, cane and bamboo, and upcycled materials to create eco-conscious summer interiors.

Balconies adorned with vertical gardens, sun-filtering jute blinds, and hand-painted terracotta planters add both function and flair. Workshops on sustainable design, Vaastu science, and textile crafts are being organized within the colony and in nearby venues, making CR Park a quiet hub for summer creativity.

Community Cool: The Power of Local Bonds

Perhaps what truly makes summers in CR Park bearable — and even beautiful — is the strong community spirit. Neighbors often gather for evening adda sessions, poetry readings, or informal yoga groups. The presence of resident-led platforms like CR Park Speaks enables hyperlocal storytelling, citizen journalism, and the documentation of shared heritage, giving voice to the people and their lived summer experiences.

Summer Wellness and Spiritual Anchors

The colony’s many temples and spiritual spaces — like Shiv Mandir, Radha Govind Mandir, and the multiple Kalibaris — offer not just spiritual succor but cool stone interiors and early morning peace. Wellness practitioners in the area conduct pranayama, Ayurveda, and energy healing sessions, often tailored to beat the heat and maintain summer balance.

Green Guardians: The Trees of CR Park

CR Park's landscape is peppered with sojne (drumstick) trees, mango trees, jamun, neem, and gulmohar, many of which are decades old. These are more than green cover; they are habitats for squirrels, parrots, bulbuls, and crows — adding life and sound to the long afternoons.

Resident-led eco-initiatives like “Jal Rakshak CR Park” emphasize water conservation, tree care, and mindful living — crucial for summers in a changing climate.

Why CR Park is a Summer Gem in Delhi

While Delhi summers can be unforgiving, CR Park offers an alternative narrative — one where community, creativity, and culture come together to redefine summer living. Whether you're a visitor looking to explore a unique part of Delhi, a designer seeking inspiration, or a resident rediscovering your roots, CR Park invites you to slow down, soak in its stories, and savor a summer that’s steeped in soul.
